HOREC at a Glance

Activities
Sports

The children are engaged in sports to nurture their talents. Although the playground is not adequate, HOREC has improvised a small area where the children play soccer and netball. The children are also actively involved in sports in their respective schools.

Music, Dance and Drama
HOREC has very talented children who have gone as far as recording songs that touch on the plight of children and HIV and AIDS. The children have sang and recited a poem during the Truth, Justice and reconciliation commission to great applause from the audience.

HOREC Projects
HOREC has a number of projects that are designed to provide a steady supply of food for the children and sell the surplus to the community.
Safaricom Foundation
Chicken coop

Geese and Turkeys
Indigenous Chicken that replaced broilers

Funds for the construction of the chicken coop were provided by Safaricom Foundation. The chicken coop initially housed broilers and layers that were later replaced with indigenous chicken, Turkeys and geese. Eggs from the indigenous chicken provide a nutritious meal for the children who are living with HIV and AIDS. The children also enjoy a meal of chicken during holidays.

Dairy Goats Project
The 410 Bridge International and Ithministries
Funds to construct the goat pen were donated by The 410 Bridge International and the dairy goats purchased by Ithministries-both are  Christian based organizations. Currently we have a total of 6 goats from the initial two donated. Milk from the goats is highly recommended for children who are infected with HIV and AIDS.

First United Methodist Church, Davis and Shirtlif and Living Water International
Water Project
Vegetables flourishing in our farm thanks for the water from the borehole
Water was one of the greatest need in HOREC as well as the community. HOREC is situated in and arid area. Through the First United Method Church, a borehole was sank in HOREC that has adequate water for our needs (both domestic and for farming) and selling at a small fee to the community.

The water has helped to cut cost in the purchase of greens as most is cultivated in the farm. Surplus kales from the farm is sold to the community. Davis and Shirtlif donated a pump and filtration unit for safe drinking water.

Barclays Bank and the First United Methodist Church (FUMC)
Greenhouse
One of the two greenhouses donated to us by BBK and FUMC. HOREC practices organic farming.
Barclays Bank partnership with the HOREC dates back in 2007 when the bank constructed a dormitory for our girls. This partnership has been ongoing-this year the bank funded the construction of a greenhouse. HOREC requested for an additional greenhouse from the FUMC who went ahead to donate. HOREC practices organic farming which doesn’t use chemicals.
PG BISON
Kitchen Fittings
PG BISON donation of Kitchen fitting.
As part of PG BISON CSR, HOREC benefited from a state of art kitchen fittings. Food and utensils are stored in the cabinets.
NSR MEDIA
Vehicle
HOREC founder Christine Wambui with some of the children under her care seated on the car donated by NSR Media
Because some of our children are living with HIV and AIDS a car was necessary to transport the children to the clinic. NSR, a media house in Australia donated a vehicle for that purpose.
